A ODISSEIA CRIOULA - THE CREOLE ODYSSEY

Este livro foi escrito para o Povo, para o filho, a filha, a mãe, o pai e os amigos do Povo de Cabo Verde: Por isso procurámos escrevê-lo tão simples quanto nos foi possível para que se possa compreender o que realmente dizemos nele. Ele não é mais nem menos que uma conversa sincera com o Povo no sentido indicado aqui, uma conversa sobre as alegrias, tristezas e esperanças do Povo cabo-verdiano.

This second edition of The Creole Odyssey, i.e., the Capeverdean People's Odyssey is revised and enlarged. Both the first and the second editions have the purpose of functioning as an ideological arm in our fighting for an authentic independence of Cape Verde at all levels: political, economic, intellectual, moral and spiritual.

This anthology is, generally speaking, addressed to all those who are interested in fighting against all forms of dictatorship, being one of them the One Party Regime like the one prevalent in our country from 1975 to 1991, namely the PAIGC/CV which was a communist party, the foundation of which is Marxism-Leninism, an atheistic and materialistic conception of the world and Man. The book is, however, of particular importance for the people of the ex-colonies in the Third World, especially the Portuguese ones, i.e., Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, S.Tomé e Príncipe, Angola and Moçambique. The book is conceived with the purpose of awakening these people's awareness of their human dignity which, as we hope, may create in them the real sense of moral responsibility, a human characteristic - a moral virtue - without which there will be no good social order and the unity necessary for democracy, liberty and social justice, all of which constitute vital needs of the ex-colonies.

Our anthology contains the contributions of different Capeverdean writers spread over almost the whole world, which means that it has the potentiality to give a rich and correct account of the multifarious experiences vécues of the Capeverdean people residing in various parts of the world.

The term Odyssey is used here in analogy to its original sense as it occurs in the writings of the poet Homeros who describes the Greek Odyssey. The only difference between the two is that the Greek Odyssey is about the struggle and suffering of one man (Ulisses), a suffering which ended with victory and glory, whereas the Creole Odyssey is about the suffering of an entire people, during generations and generations of more than 500 years, a constant agony created by the colonial oppression, an indefinite anguish caused by the hardship of the climate of our beloved country, and the martyrdom and torment engendered by emigration, all these comprising an immense suffering which has not seen its end, and which is still lacking the victory and glory of the Greek Odyssey.

By analysing all these factors which induce in the Capeverdeans all kinds of suffering, by counterbalancing the latter with the few moments of joy and satisfaction, by taking into consideration the everlasting effect of our paciência (patience) and esperança (hope), both of which being the, panacea and comfort of all our suffering, the authors of this book attempt to delineate the necessary ideological and moral presuppositions for a future Cape Verde, one which is capable of dignifying all her children by providing them with the means necessary for the satisfaction of their basic needs, the primary as well as the secondary ones. By doing this through, inter alia, democratic laws and the implementation of social justice, without discriminating anybody, Cape Verde may be respected by all nations of the world, at least by those which are members of the United Nations, that is to say, those that have deliberately and by moral imperative obliged themselves to defend all the articles of the UN:s Universal Declaration of Human Rights!

We deeply apologize for the various mistakes found in the first edition in 1990, which can be explained by the fact that the book was written under a great time pressure. We hope that this edition is better than the former in various respects

DOMINGOS BARBOSA DA SILVA é Licenciado em Farmacologia pela Universidade de Oslo, Noruega e trabalha como farmacêutico na Noruega. Domingos é um colaborador assíduo do Terra Nova do qual é correspondente na Noruega. É, com o irmão António, co-autor do livro KULTURKONFRONTATION – KRIS ELLEER MOJLIGHET? (A Confrontação cultural – conduz ela necessariamente a uma crise ou é uma possibilidade de desenvolvimento da personalidade?), escrito em sueco, norueguês e inglês, Uppsala, 1988. Foi editor do Boletim Informativo, Tribuna do Emigrante, da Associação Cabo-Verdiana de Oslo. Domingos tem publicado vários artigos sobre a farmacologia e a microbióloga clínicas.

ANTÓNIO BARBOSA DA SILVA tem o curso de Electrónica pela Escola Militar de Electromecânica em Paço de Arcos, Portugal, curso correspondente ao Agente Técnico da Engenharia. Estudou Psicologia na Universidade Católica de Lisboa (Instituto Superior de Psicologia Aplicada; estudou Psicologia nas Universidades de Oslo, Noruega e Uppsala, Suécia; estudou Pedagogia na Universidade de Estocolmo, Suécia. Tem o curso de Pastor pelo Instituto Betel, Suécia, onde foi professor durante dois anos. É Licenciado em Filosofia, Doutorado em Teologia Racional pela Universidade de Uppsala onde exerce o cargo de Professor-Catedrático-Assistente (Docent) desde 1982. Durante 1987 desempenhou o papel de Secretário da igreja Sueca para o Diálogo entre o Cristianismo e as outras Religiões. Durante esse tempo escreveu o opúsculo Racismo Entre Nós e o livro Missão e o Diálogo entre o Cristianismo e Outras Religiões (co-autor: padre, Hans Ucko). Desde 1 de Janeiro de 1993 é professor de filosofia da ciência no Nordic School of Public Health (50%). A partir de 1 de Agosto de 1993 desempenha o cargo de professor de Ciências da Religião em Stavanger, Noruega. Ensina, inter alia, ética cristã, os fundamentos ontológicos e gnoseológicos das ideologias contemporâneas (e.g., Marxismo-Leninismo, Existencialismo, Fenomenologia e Humanismo); ensina Ética Medicinal em vários Hospitais Académicos e várias Universidades da Suécia, Finlândia, Aland e Noruega, nos quais se usam alguns dos seus livros e artigos como textos curriculares obrigatórios. Tem dado vários programas e cursos, por exemplo, de Ética Medicinal para estudantes de medicina e enfermagem, na Rádio e na Televisão sueca. António tem também escrito vários artigos em vários jornais internacionais e suecos.
